Clearing Caño Palma

After the rain and strong winds of last weeks newsletter, Wednesday 19th morning saw our bird team have to turn back from the National Park bird survey.

Richard Philips, Head bird Honcho, describes what happened: “we were motoring down the winding twists and turns of Caño Palma. I was navigating by spotlight as it was approximately 30 minutes before dawn. Usually it is easy to find the canal using the spotlight as the water absorbs the light, whereas trees show up very clearly. On this occasion, as I came round a sharp corner on the Caño, I was suddenly unable to locate the canal anymore. I shone the spotlight in all directions but was faced with an impenetrable wall of trees.”

Once there was enough light to see clearly, a team from the station went back to the stricken tree. After 2 hours of sawing and shifting blocks of wood, the team were finally able to open the canal again.
