GVI Costa Rica wins prize at Central American Conservation Congress

Last week GVI Costa Rica broadened the realm of its participation in the Central American scientific community by participating in the XII Mesoamerican Congress for Biology and Conservation in El Salvador, with Diogo Verissimo, staff member and head of science, as our representative.

This event, the biggest in the subcontinent, gathered 500 students and conservation professionals from NGO’s, universities and governmental departments. With four conference rooms operating simultaneously, the congress consisted of 230 presentations covering a variety of subjects from species specific issues to ecological corridors and of course, climate change.

Included in the Herpetology session, GVI Costa Rica’s presentation on “Jaguar predation as a potential threat to marine turtles” generated great interest, with approximately 70 participants attending. Among these were representatives of MINAET, the Costa Rican Ministry of Environment, Energy and Telecommunications.

The presentation consequently generated momentum for extensive networking, regarding not only the turtle predation project but also with all the other research areas where GVI Costa Rica is involved.

The abstract of the presentation has been published in a special issue of the “Mesoamericana” the journal of the Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation. This marks the first scientific publication of GVI Costa Rica.

The cherry on top of the cake would however only come on the last day of the event when the president of the Mesoamerican Society for Biology and Conservation (MSBC) and the Congress organisation presented Diogo with the award for the best presentation of the congress. It is the first time this award has been held and it is with great satisfaction that we see acknowledged the efforts of our staff and volunteers. This will surely be the first of many scientific publications originating from the research carried out by GVI Costa Rica.

Thank you Diogo, for a wonderful performance and for representing GVI Costa Rica in such a successful way!
