Survey News: Turtles

Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) season is coming to a close at Jalova and what a season it’s been. GVI Costa Rica volunteers marked thirty two of their nests on the beach outside of the station and many more leatherbacks were tagged during night walks. Jalova also had twenty one Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) nests, one Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) and one Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) nest marked. Our eight new volunteers, here for five and two weeks, have all begin walking the beach and working turtles in time for the last of the Leatherbacks. Five weeker Marcus Wilkinson recalled his first turtle as something he’d never forget. “It was truly a once in a lifetime experience,” he said. John Mear, here for two weeks, had only “Wow,” to say. Our first leatherback nest hatched May 21st and a second one hatched May 25th bringing our marked nests full circle. With a full Leatherback season under our belts, Jalova is looking forward to a fantastic Green season.
