Meet Owl - Bert !

On a recent incidental walk and camera trapping check in the forest, volunteer Jackie Sands spotted something unusual on the trail ahead of her. “We didn’t know what it was at first,” she said, but as the team walked towards the creature they realized there was a bird sitting in the middle of the trail. Closer inspection revealed it to be a Crested Owl (Lophostrix cristata) promptly named Owl-bert. The Crested Owl is rare but widespread, nevertheless it is a new species for the incidentals and the first owl of this phase. It was suspected that the owl was a fledgling due to it’s small size and it’s lack of full adult plumage. It just goes to show that you never know what to expect to see when you venture out of Jalova base in Tortuguero National Park!
