Jag Walk

Our first two Jag walks have started a great debate on base. What is preferable for a 15 mile stroll down the beach to Tortuguero: torrential rain or blazing sun? 15 miles is a good walk, no matter what the weather is like - the picture (below) shows the entire stretch that the teams walk, from the start at the Jalova base pretty much to the foot of the hill on the horizon!

Difficult conditions were in store for the first six volunteers to undertake the survey which is conducted down the length of our beach in search of Marine Turtles predated by Jaguars (Panthera onca). Both walks had Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) predated less than 24 hours before detection and some that were significantly older and riper. While week three’s walk was arguably more challenging because of the heat and soft sand, it included an appearance by a red brocket deer (Mazama americana).
