Jaguar Walk

Sunday’s Jag Walk started with a beauteous sherbet-coloured sunrise on Tortuguero Beach for Haley, Rhiannon, Katie and Will. Only a short way down the beach, they came across a green turtle still busy disguising her nest. They stayed and watched as she laboured, flinging sand in all directions before making her way back to sea in the pale morning light, the foursome pausing to make a short nature film.

The team continued on their way, rollicking down the beach over (and into) the mounds of sand from numerous green turtle nests, and across the stretches of sand marked by the turtles’ flippers. As the day heated up, the team came across more and more turtles felled by the mighty jaguar, with 22 seen in all, many adorned with vultures, flies, and maggots. Each turtle was photographed and recorded, and unfortunately for much of the team, smelled. Jag prints were seen faintly in the dry, soft sand. Many hours later, the team came out the other side, tired but blister free, and proud of their 15-mile trek.
